Your choices, explained

Privacy at Fairward.

Effective September 29, 2026.

Fairward is an iPhone app developed by John Milly. It suggests nearby things to see, eat, and do using weather and place information. You do not need an account.

What stays on your device

Fairward stores your saved cities, selected and last known city, temperature unit, appearance preferences, reminder settings, and recommendation history on your device. It also caches weather and available venue descriptions to reduce repeated requests.

The current app does not include advertising, tracking, or third-party analytics SDKs. Fairward does not operate its own account or user-profile service.

Location is your choice

You can choose a city without giving Fairward location permission. If you choose Current location, Fairward requests approximate location while the app is in use and uses Apple’s city lookup to identify your city. The app requests reduced accuracy by default. You control the permission in iPhone Settings.

Fairward does not request background location access or track your location in the background. The city it identifies can be saved locally so you can return to it.

Weather and place requests

Fairward sends the viewed city’s coordinates to Apple Weather to retrieve forecasts. It may also request forecasts for a suggested place’s coordinates to consider conditions at that destination. City and place searches use Apple Maps and can include search text, city coordinates, venue names, and addresses.

These services receive the information needed to respond to the request, along with network information associated with connecting to them. Apple handles information through its services under its own privacy practices. Opening a place card or directions takes you to Apple Maps.

Wikipedia descriptions

When Fairward looks for an About description, it contacts Wikipedia using a venue’s name and, when needed, that venue’s coordinates. It does not send your device’s precise location to Wikipedia. Wikipedia receives the request and associated network information, including your IP address.

Matched excerpts are cached on your device for up to seven days of reuse. Unsuccessful lookups are held for about an hour before retrying. Article and license links accompany the excerpts. Following a link opens a third-party destination with its own privacy practices.

On-device AI

Where Apple’s on-device Foundation Model is available, Fairward uses it to help choose among real places returned by Apple Maps. This selection runs on your iPhone. It does not use a remote chatbot service. Weather-based matching is used when on-device AI is unavailable.

On-device selection does not mean that every Fairward feature works offline. Weather, city lookup, place discovery, and Wikipedia descriptions use the online services described above.

Optional reminders

If you enable check-in reminders, Fairward asks for notification permission and schedules reminders locally on your iPhone. The schedule is stored on your device. Reminders do not fetch weather in the background; weather updates when you open the app. You can turn reminders off in Fairward or manage notification permission in iPhone Settings.

Storage and your controls

Fairward reuses recent weather locally and may display cached weather up to 24 hours old when a fresh request is unavailable. Expired cache files may remain on your device until replaced or cleared by the app or operating system. Preferences and recommendation history remain local until changed or removed.

You can remove saved cities, choose a city manually, change your preferences, or revoke location access in iPhone Settings. Deleting the app removes its local app data from that device. Device backups are managed separately through Apple’s backup settings and policies.

If you contact support

If you contact us by email, John Milly receives your email address, message, and any attachments you choose to send. This information is used to answer your request and investigate the issue. You can contact the same address to ask about removal of support correspondence.
